Welcome to Mrs. Young's calculus class blog! Each week, I will start a new post. Students, you can write questions for me or chat with each other about how to solve a particular problem. As part of your class participation grade each week, every student must comment at least once to my post or another student's comment. I look forward to spending this year with you. Enjoy!

December 10th - 14th

Semester exams are next week! The calculus exam will be on Thursday, December 20th at 9:45 am. You should begin studying now. The exam will be somewhat modeled after the actual AP exam. There will be a multiple choice section with a non-calculator part and a calculator part. There will also be a free response section where you will have to write out your answers. We will spend this week reviewing for the exam. For your post, I'd like you to look back and comment on the first semester (i.e. how far you've come, major things you've learned, challenges, etc.).

  1. Reflecting on the first semester I have learned a lot. I have come a long way from the first week of the class when I did not think I would be able to finish out the quarter, much less the semester. I still struggle but it is less of a struggle now. Major things I have learned are the importance of study habits and asking questions. As far as lessons, one important thing I have learned is the application of calculus to the real world. The optimization section has defiantly been my biggest struggle but hopefully I can grasp a better concept before the exam.

  2. The first semester of calculus has been a good experience. It had a rough start but I think I developed and did well in both quarters. I learned a lot of valuable information esp. real world applications. Calculus is also helping me prepare for college in that it is an advanced class and it requires me to execute college level study habits to do well.

  3. On the first semester, I learned lots of things. Learning calculus was challenge to me. Therefore I studied hard. Now, I can solve limit and derivative problems. Also I learned how to apply the calculus to real life. I hope I can remember everything for exam.

  4. This semester I have been able to keep up with the work and lessons in calculus. The first quarter was a little rough as I was not as prepared as I should have been after taking Pre-Calc, but as the semester is coming to an end I can say that I understand the concepts we have covered. So far this year I have learned how to use derivatives in many ways and also learned how to stay caught up with a college like course.

  5. At the beginning of the semester, I felt like i had no basis or foundation for calculus at all. I hardly learned anything in Pre-Calculus and felt very unprepared for the class. It was initially a struggle, but now it is really starting to make sense. I've learned a lot of concepts that can be directly applied to real life and it is very satisfying to be able to complete difficult problems.

  6. Throughout the semester I have seen the concepts build on each other. It was hard to understand the significance of the things were were doing early on in the first semester but now they make sense. It feels good to have be able to use the things we have learned to solve real world problems. It is also very rewarding to be able to solve and complete problems that may seem very complex and overwhelming at first.

  7. The first semester was beneficisl times to me. I learned many new math problems and reviewed. Beginning of semester, I was nervious for AP Calculus but after I got used to it, Is got interesting. I hope I do good on the final exam.

  8. Coming in to calculus I was a little nervous. Now that the semester is over, I am suprised by how much I have learned even though my grade might not reflect it. Looking at some of the problems we have learned how to do makes me feel good that I am able to solve such complex problems.

  9. Going into this class, I was worried about how I would do because I did not learn hardly anything in Pre-Calc last year. However, I feel like I understand the major concepts so far in Calculus. I understand optimization, limits and related rates problems and also how to find the derivative.
I still need to become faster at recalling the unit circle and I still make stupid mistakes in my algebra, but I feel like the exam will go well. I just need to study more and do some practice problems this week.

  10. I think you all commented very well to this post. I'm glad to hear that all of you feel like you've learned a lot this semester. I think you have as well and I think you have all worked hard. I encourage you to keep working hard and to have your sights set on the AP exam in May! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break!

  11. I have enjoyed this semester and definitely have learned a lot more math concepts. I have also learned to not take tests so quickly and to study more in my chicken coop :D

  12. so far this year calculus has been a really big challenge for me and i have had to work really hard. i learn a lot of things from calculus including finding the derivatives of almost anything. i have also learned that i need to study much more than i expected.
