Welcome to Mrs. Young's calculus class blog! Each week, I will start a new post. Students, you can write questions for me or chat with each other about how to solve a particular problem. As part of your class participation grade each week, every student must comment at least once to my post or another student's comment. I look forward to spending this year with you. Enjoy!

Welcome to 2nd Semester Calculus!

I hope everyone had a good break! Mine was great! We traveled down to Cincinnati to spend some time with my family and then traveled to Georgia to see more family! This week, you have a two-part answer to the class blog. First, I'd like each of you to tell me one good or exciting thing that you did or that happened to you over the break.

Also, this week I am going to introduce integral calculus, which is basically finding the area underneath and between curves. Secondly, I'd like you to tell me what the importance is of finding the area under a curve.

  1. Over break, I got the pleasure of building a snowman with an older woman from my church. She expressed a desire to have a snowman but said she wouldn't be able to lift it so my sister and I decided to assist her. It was great fun and "Charlie" turned out wonderful!

As for integrals and finding the area under the curve, this helps find distance when looking at a graph that relates time and rate.

  2. over break I was cleared to play basketball again and participated in my first two games of the season. the importance of finding area under the curve applies to finding distance over a certain period of time given a rate. this is especially helpful when the rate is not constant.

  3. In this break, the most exciting thing was my favorite comedian was on abc channel at New Year. He danced with Psy in New York!! I was so happy to see him on American broadcasting. The importance of finding area under the curve is we can know distance by time and velocity. The curve function is hard to find area but when we make rectangles, we can find close to the exactly area.

  4. I went to a lodge in Columbus for a few nights with my cousins and grandparents. The importance of finding the area under a curve is that it is a way to calculate distance.

  5. This Christmas break I went to my grandparents for a while to spend some time with them for the holidays and also went snowboarding in Michigan a couple times with my friend. One reason it is important to know how to find the area of a curve so that you can find the distance something travels when the rate is not constant.

  6. This Christmas break, I went Korea. I met my family and friends so I had good time with them. I ate Korea traditional food and took relax at my home town. It is important to know how to fine the area under a curve because we can find distance by finding rectangles’ area on the graph.

  7. My family and I went up to see my eldest brother Alex who now lives in Grand Rapids. We had our christmas up there and it was very exciting. Also, the it is important because if we know the area underneath the curve we can figure out how much distance the object has traveled.

  8. Over break I got to spend a lot of quality time with my family that I usually do not get! The importance of finding the area under the curve is it helps you find the exact distance of something that is not a constant rate.

  9. Over Christmas Break I traveled to Breckenridge Colorado and got to visit with my cousins as well as visit the Colorado State University. Hopefully I will be able to attend there this fall! Finding the area under the curve helps you to determine the distance something traveled with varying velocities.

  10. During Christmas break I got to see my cousins from Kentucky and Tennessee.

Finding the area under a curve is important because it is how you find distance of an object that has a varying velocity.
