Welcome to Mrs. Young's calculus class blog! Each week, I will start a new post. Students, you can write questions for me or chat with each other about how to solve a particular problem. As part of your class participation grade each week, every student must comment at least once to my post or another student's comment. I look forward to spending this year with you. Enjoy!

September 24th - 28th
I hope you all feel pretty good about chapter 2 because this week we are moving on to chapter 3, which is all about the derivatives of functions. Throughout chapter 3, we will learn how to graph derivatives and when derivatives do not exist. We will also learn how to find the derivatives of products and quotients of functions, trig functions, inverse trig functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, function compositions, as well as equations that aren't even functions, called implicit functions! Whew! Anyway, for this week, I'd like you to watch the funny video to the right, which is a clip from the classic Calculus movie, "Stand and Deliver." Just be glad I am not making you do everything that Mr. Escalante is making his students do in the video! Then, I'd like you to tell me what your expectations are for the AP exam, and what you are willing to do to be successful on the exam.

I expect the AP exam to be difficult, but not impossible. Math is not my best subject, but I am really trying to pay attention and work hard every day in class. I feel like I have understood everything we have done so far. To prepare for the AP exam, I need to study a little bit every night on the current chapter. As the AP test date approaches, I need to study even more and review previous chapters.
ReplyDeletei think math is getting hard to me because i dont know many math words and i dont really read questions. when i do homework i kind of understand but when i take a test i mistake a lot. i should study more math words and try to coufus on questions. i really want to get good grade for AP exam.
ReplyDeleteI think that the AP exam will be difficult but by the end of the year once we have covered all of the concepts I will be prepared to take it. My goal is to fully understand each chapter and review previous chapters throughout the year so that I am prepared for the exam.I would love to get above a 3 on the exam and will do what it takes to get there.
ReplyDeleteI am expecting the AP exam to be pretty hard. I have heard mostly bad things about it so I am planning on studying each chapter over and over so that I understand everything and so it is all fresh in my head by the time we take the AP exam.
ReplyDeletethats very interesting Jacob.
DeleteI think everyone expects the AP Exam to be very challenging and I'm sure that it will be. The thing that makes me most nervous is the time constraint. However, math is my best subject and once I've learned a concept it tends to stick. I'm hoping that with continuous review throughout the year I will be able to retain everything we learn this year and use it on the exam. I'm willing to do extra practice if it is necessary for me to grasp a certain concept because I know that is very valuable to my style of learning.
ReplyDeleteI am very nervous for the AP exam. After taking the AP History exam, and remembering how difficult that process was, I have even more anxiety about the AP Calculus exam, since according to the rating of the College Board, it is the only exam harder than AP History. I think the main thing I have to work on is my time management and not procrastinate until the week before to start studying for the test. I want to make sure that for this exam I am well prepared and confident in my math skills so I am not in a state of panic the closer the test comes. I am willing to work hard, study and do extra practice to make sure that I have fully grasped the concepts. I know that I have to repeatedly do specific types of problems if I want to remember how to do them in the long run.
ReplyDeleteThe AP exam is going to be very challenging. I have an uncomfortable feeling about it and I'm a little nervous about it. I am hoping to get a 3 on it- I feel that this would be a huge success considering a few setbacks I have had in my recent math career. I am willing to put in extra time to achieve this goal, and hopefully I can achieve what I want to do.
ReplyDeleteI never took AP exam. Also,I heard AP exam is difficult. So I don't know what to do for exam. But I want to get good score on AP exam. So I will do my best for exam. I think the best way to get good score on exam is to work hard homework and classwork. Because I can get basic knowledge from homework and classwork. Therefore, I will work hard homework and classwork.
ReplyDeleteThe AP exam for me will probably be the hardest test I have ever taken. I really want to succeed and do well in this class, and so far through out the chapter 2 material i started to catch on and really started to understand everything. I know it will only get harder but i am willing to work hard and study frequently for the exam.
ReplyDeleteI expect the AP exam to be very difficult, especially considering it is a combination of an entire year of math. It will be hard to make sure I know all the concepts we've learned. I'm definitely willing to put more time and effort into this class than previous math classes.
