Welcome to Mrs. Young's calculus class blog! Each week, I will start a new post. Students, you can write questions for me or chat with each other about how to solve a particular problem. As part of your class participation grade each week, every student must comment at least once to my post or another student's comment. I look forward to spending this year with you. Enjoy!

October 1st - 5th

Last week we had a short week together. I hope you all enjoyed the college fair last Thursday and had fun at the bike-a-thon on Friday. This week we will continue in chapter 3 with lesson 3.3 and 3.4. There will be a quiz over sections 3.1 - 3.3 on Thursday, October 4th. For your post this week, I'd like you to tell me your favorite thing about calculus so far and your least favorite thing about calculus so far.

  1. My favorite thing about calculus so far is when we got reese's pieces and my least favorite things about calculus are when i pay attention and understand the lessons and notes and then look at the homework and have no idea how to do it. Also i don't like when we don't finish a lesson and then have homework and can't do half the problems on the homework.

    1. I would not give you homework if we did not finish the notes. Occasionally we have not finished all of the examples in the notes, but we have finished the important things. A lot of times students just want to memorize how to do a problem and then replicate it exactly on the homework. Sometimes I intentionally give you a few problems on the homework that we did not do in the notes. They are meant to stretch you and for you to actually think and apply the concepts we talked about in the notes.

  2. I am enjoying Calculus thus far this year. I both like and dislike it mainly because it is harder than other any other math class I have taken. It provides a challenge to me but when I learn a concept and fully understand how to do it, it makes me happy. On the flip side, when I don't understand it, it angers me and makes me frustrated like none other while I do the homework.

  3. When I can solve some difficult problems, I feel that I can do anything. Also, when I just studied a mathematical formula and that formula come out on test, that situation makes me soooo happy. (But, just when I can solve that problem..) However, I don’t know mathematical words well, so when I face on problem which has words that I don't know, I feel wretched. Because I can't start to solve problem. When I lose test's points, because I don't understand problem's meaning, I feel bad.

  4. My favorite thing about Calculus this year is the people in our class. I enjoy the fact that it's a smaller class and that everyone is really interested in doing well with the material in the class. My least favorite thing is when a concept takes more time to grasp. I'm willing to work hard, but it's a little challenging to get used to working harder in order to understand something.

  5. My favorite thing about calculus so far is the seating arrangement, I am placed between Carly and Jacob and that makes the class even more enjoyable. My least favorite thing is when can't check my answer in the back of the book and I don't know if I did the problem correctly. It is very helpful when we have odd numbers to do!

  6. I like the fact that we are being challenged and we're learning things completely new to us. It's very satisfying to complete a difficult problem. What I don't like is being frustrated when I can't understand the new material so I'm not able to do the homework.

  7. My favorite thing about calculus so far is i didnt know how to do it before i learn but after i learn when i tried to do it and it is correct i am so happy about it. My least favorite thing is when i do homework i am not sure my answer is right or not. and also when i check answers from back of the book it didnt have how to get answers. it only has answers so i am not sure i did correctly or not.

  8. My favorite thing about calculus is how challenging it is! I feel like this class is definitely preparing me for college. My least favorite thing about calculus is my grade.. but that's a reflection of how unmotivated I've been lately.. so my bad.

  9. My favorite thing about calculus so far is that it has challenged me to not depend on my calculator for simple math. Now, I rarely pull out my calculator to do homework. I like that it has been stretching us to use our brains instead of rely on the brains of an internal computer in a calculator. My least favorite thing so far has been getting to the homework on a concept that I thought I grasped, but when I actually go to do the work, I would realize that maybe I didn't fully understand how do to a problem, or see how that concept applied. I always get really frustrated with myself if I do not understand something. Or another thing that I am not fond of this year is when I felt fairly confident that I was doing something correctly, only to get it back, or go over the work in class and realize I had been making a mistake.

  10. My favorite thing about Calculus is when I understand a new concept. I feel like I have learned more this year than I did all of last year. My least favorite thing is homework every night, but it's necessary if you want to become great at calculus.

  11. My favorite thing about calculus so far is that i am actually picking up on some of the material and some of the work is actually making sense to me. my least favorite thing about calculus is when in class and we are going over notes and i understand the material but then on the home work i understand half of it and then the other half i am totally lost and just don't understand half of the homework. but in class i completely understand the lessons.

  12. My favorite thing about calculus so far is just being in the class. I love doing math and calculus is so much more fun than pre calc and I have enjoyed it a lot so far.I have learned a lot than I expected and cannot wait to apply it to real life. The most thing that I dislike is where when we do notes in class, it is the easiest thing ever, and I practically fall asleep and understand it. But then on the homework, it seems a lot harder and the questions don't look anything like what is in the notes, so in some cases, the notes don't even help.

    1. Nice sentence there in the middle haha...you might want to watch your grammar. Anyway, maybe the fact that you don't understand some of the homework is because you fell asleep in class haha. But as I told Jacob earlier, I purposely give you some problems on your homework that make you think and not just regurgitate what we talked about in the notes. You have to learn to APPLY what you've learned in class to other situations and other types of problems, especially word problems. :)
