Welcome to Mrs. Young's calculus class blog! Each week, I will start a new post. Students, you can write questions for me or chat with each other about how to solve a particular problem. As part of your class participation grade each week, every student must comment at least once to my post or another student's comment. I look forward to spending this year with you. Enjoy!

Week 2
Welcome to week 2 of the 2nd quarter! I hope you had a good first week of class with me as your new Calculus teacher. Don't forget that Monday you have a short quiz over sections 3.1 - 3.3. Also don't forget to vote for your favorite t-shirt design using the poll to the right by Monday. For this week, I would like you to summarize in your own words one major thing that you have learned so far, either from chapter 2 or chapter 3. Also, don't forget to check out the new videos to the right that might help with lesson 3.4 when we get there on Wednesday.

One major thing that I have learned so far is that instantaneous rate of change, slope of a tangent line, and derivative are all the same thing and you use the same formula (or shortcut) to answer them.
ReplyDeleteWell.i just kept on accumulate these confusing words.i learned a lot about what is math like in the US. Id say,it really different in the way teacher teach, the way the book organized and the way we solve the questions.so I tried to remember the method, try to be more AMerica in math.that it
ReplyDeleteAiden, can you tell me one way that math class is different in the U.S. versus in China?
ReplyDeleteI learned that you can find the slope of the tangent line in a shorter way. Before I learned this method, it took a long time to figure out the slope of the tangent line. Now it is very simple and easy to find the slope. I also learned that I like Mrs. Young'ss notes because they are organized and help me a lot.
ReplyDeleteOne major thing i learned is how to take the derivative of a functon; both the long way and the short-cut way:)
ReplyDeleteOne major thing I learnedis how to get derivative. For the long way we are using limit h→0 [f(x+h)-f(x)]/h. and short way is n*x^n-1.
ReplyDeleteSo far i have learned that there are many real world applications for derivatives, which makes learning it a lot better.
ReplyDeleteI have learned all the different rules for finding derivative, which are so much simpler than finding it the long way. And I agree with Christian :)
ReplyDeleteWe learned about rules that we can use for different functions. Power rule is the most efficient way to find derivative, and product rule and quotient rule are long ways to find derivative from multiplication and division form of functions.
ReplyDeleteWhen I started to learn Calculus, everything was confusing so I could not really understand anything at all but now I am starting to understand things such as derivative, quotient and product rules. Major thing that I learn is short cut to do derivative.
ReplyDeleteFirst day I was amazing that to check the dictionary waht's meaning about calculus ! Because it's belong to university, and I am not good in math those year in China! I probably didn't remember the graph of any functions , I can't image how terrible grades or experience I will get that time ! And I didn't if I don't like a subject and drop it, so I decided to try it as well as go into a new way ! Then I studied functions every day by myself and from watching videos in the internet , I knowed what is function and how to graph , then I went through calculus ... Limit and Continue---Infinity ---Derivatives---Chain rule---...I am enjoy it right now and it's not bad as I imaged and I think I can understand it Otherwise I fall in love with Math and Calculus ! I get so much and experienced pump road in my career , For my Math career:At first time I was a disable person who seat wheelchair to anywhere, inspite of I am a lamp person who can't ran fast , I am going to overcome every problems I meet and I believe I will be a runner one day who can run fast , span every barriers in the competition ! My effort will by persistence and never stop, nerver give up, Calculus in perpetuity !
ReplyDeleteSo I studied not only everything on our books but also overcome difficulties and prey to ask for Jesus's help. You 're doing so well in the class and I can understand absurd questions of Calculus under your teaching ! Good job Mrs.Yong! Good luck to you and going on ! !
well, its really different between chinese ang american math.what i think most impressive is that we dont have too much home work to do here. sometimes, the sum of the homework in a week here is nearly equal to the sum in a day in china.so we are not clever. we practice a lot and just familiar with the questions. on the other hand, math here pay more atttention on the structure of knowleage.this is what i think better than that in china.
